ACCOMMODATION CRISIS IN ABU ZARIA
There is a saying that every bad situation is a good day for another. These words clearly defines what is going on in student hostel is ABU Zaria today.
The difficulty associated with getting decent and congestion-free accommodation in tertiary institutions across the country is assuming disturbing dimensions. At the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, the situation is getting out of hand.
The activities of student black marketers who would buy bed space at the school’s official rate of N7,000 only to resell same at over 500 percent increase have brought untold hardship to students of the institution.
Our investigation revealed that the situation is such that some students who have no intention of living on campus will go ahead and secure accommodation in several places and later sell same to fellow students at unbelievable rates.
To matter rather worse, the management of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria has, however, made it clear that all 300-level students are not entitled to accommodation on campus. But some students have expressed reservation about this decision.
The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garba has decried the lack of accommodation for students of the institution.
Garba, in his address at the 38th convocation ceremony of the university held at the main campus, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State, bemoaned the fact that the university with a population of about 40,000 students has accommodation for only 11,000 students on its campuses.
